Carolina Concerto - North Carolina Blue Ridge Parkway Spring Mountains Scenic Landscape
Spring in the Appalachian Mountains is upon us, and it's one of my favorite times to be in the mountains. It's hard to beat the scenic beauty of the warm light at the end of the day during the spring rhododendron bloom in the mountains of Western North Carolina. The feel of the warm breeze on your skin, the smell of the passing rain on fresh flowers, the intense color of golden light on the distant ridges, it's an amazing time to be in the mountains! Hope you enjoy the view!

I am an avid lover of this section of the Parkway. To me this area around the Richland Balsam Mountain is very special. That is Lake Logan in Haywood county in the distance with the gnarly Lickstone Ridge rising up from Highway 215. In the far left of Dave's picture the Lickstone keeps rising and at the top is the Pinnacle of the Richland Balsam Mountain.(Not Pictured in this photo) This is not an overlook it is a really special spot on the side of the road. If travelling south on the Parkway towards Cherokee this spot is on the right hand side of the road around milepost 429 or 430. Most of the best spots for photography are right on the side of the road and by the way the Mountain Laurel, Flames Azaleas and Catawba Rhododendron are blooming out profusely right now in this area. Not the best year for the Catawba but the Mountain Laurel are crazy right now and the more rare Flame Azalea. Just up the road is a no descript parking area on the left and then the famous Cowee Overlook on the left that is a great spot for sunsets. The very next overlook on the left is the Richland Balsam overlook. These area the Great Balsam Mountains that many confuse with the Blue Ridge and some will even call theses mountains the Smoky Mountain National Park. The Great Balsams are a cross range of the Appalachians that are an entity to themselves.
